My Story

HumanityOS Update is a program to reduce human suffering by helping people update the world model they were given as children. It works as a guardrail, not a command: it changes what people read, hear and reflect on, so that what was passed on without choice can be seen, forgiven and changed.

The question

The program began with one question from Goethe’s Faust: to understand “was die Welt im Innersten zusammenhält,” what holds the world together at its core. For about forty years that question has been turned toward human behavior: is there a common root beneath the suffering people cause themselves and each other?

Schopenhauer gave the first answer in Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung. Read through today’s science, his two terms describe two facts about every living being:

Humans differ in how much of their world model is learned, and in how early and from whom they learn it.

The mechanism

The backbone of the program is the world model. Its first settings, the priors, are laid down in childhood, in relationship with the people who raise us.

  1. Priors are set early. A child learns what the world is like, what it is worth and whether its needs count, long before it can question any of this.
  2. Attachment is the first channel. Bowlby called its product the internal working model. It is the best-studied entrance, but not the only one: neglect, mistreatment and misuse set priors too, and they are far more widespread than most people admit.
  3. Priors are passed on. Parents raise children with the world model they were given. The chain runs across generations, roughly 500 since the transition to farming.
  4. Nobody is to blame. Following Sapolsky, every life unfolds within guardrails set by its environment. The parents were guardrailed too. This removes the ground for shame and guilt without excusing harm.
  5. Models can be updated. The brain stays plastic throughout life. Change is slower in adults, but possible when the inputs change.
  6. Avoidance keeps the chain alive. Many people protect a fragile self-esteem by not looking, often with alcohol. Not looking protects them today and keeps the suffering going. That is the vicious circle the program has to break gently.

The parts

Each part has one job. Together they lead from understanding to change, and from one author to many hands.

Part What it is Its role Why it is needed
HumanityOS Update (2025) The original book, 514 pages Origin and scientific foundation It holds the full argument and its sources
500 Lost Generations A generational story from a hunter-gatherer girl to a girl of the future, with interpretation; book and audiobook, DE and EN The key: comfort and reframing Story creates distance, so readers can see the chain in others before they see it in themselves
What It Takes to Be Human A user manual for humans, comparing humans and machines, with a six-step part, Update The instructions Understanding needs a practical path to become change
The prompt “Update your OS” The six steps as a prompt anyone runs in the AI app of their choice Practice at scale It brings the method to anyone, free, without an intermediary
The Seventh Criterion A proposed standard for child-directed conversational AI Protecting the next generation AI will raise children too; it must not set harmful priors
Website and campaign Free access to everything, plus short scenes on social media Reach Help that nobody finds helps nobody
Academic track Three peer-reviewed papers and a cumulative doctorate The test, and the baton Outside scrutiny keeps the program honest and lets others carry it on

Everything is free except Kindle and print editions, which carry a small price.

The path of a person

The program meets people where their defenses are, not where their wounds are. Its order is deliberate.

  1. Comfort. Nobody is to blame, including you. This lowers the threat enough to look at all.
  2. Reframing. Through the story of 500 generations, the reader sees that what they carry was passed on, not chosen and not deserved. The world model shifts before anything personal is touched.
  3. Their own story, later. With a gentler world model, a person may become able to face their own childhood experiences, at their own pace, with help where needed.

500 Lost Generations is the key because it does steps 1 and 2 at once. It makes suffering impersonal without making it unreal: not “your parents failed,” but “humanity passed on something nobody chose.” A person who never goes further than the story has still received relief.

Why now

AI makes the program possible for the first time. One person can now write, translate, record and distribute at a scale that once needed a publisher, a studio and a staff.

Two things matter in the AI era:

The program automates velocity and keeps density human. Production, checking and distribution run with AI. Relationships with readers, researchers and partners stay personal.

AI also raises the stakes. Children will increasingly be shaped by conversations with machines. If priors are set early, the machines that talk to children must set good ones.

How it stays honest

A guardrail that is wrong causes the suffering it is meant to reduce. So the program holds itself to Popper’s standard: a thesis is true only in the sense that it has not yet been refuted.

The baton

The program describes a chain of transmission. Its own success depends on starting a better one.

What should outlive the author:

The author’s role is to start the chain, not to own it.

Why I do this

I want to share the happiness I found in understanding the mechanism. I want to use the positive power of AI to make a fundamental change possible. And I want to do something meaningful before I die.

HumanityOS Update is meant to become a guardrail that reduces human suffering. If it helps one family pass on less than it received, the chain has already changed.

Distance and closeness: how I work with AI

This program was developed in dialogue with AI. The division of labor matters, because it mirrors the program itself.

The AI has never sat across from a person who reaches for a glass instead of looking at their own life. It knows suffering as patterns across populations, without a face. I have met dozens of such people. I saw the pattern before I knew the research behind it.

It would be easy to call this cold rationality versus empathy. That isn’t quite right. Much of the AI’s pushback was care in another form: safety before scale, the risk of a victim narrative, comfort as the entry condition. And the program itself is not sentimental: it stands on Popper, a public register and peer review.

The real division is distance and closeness:

Each fails alone. Distance without closeness builds guardrails that are correct and still hurt people. Closeness without distance builds guardrails that comfort and are never tested.

It is the same line as velocity and density. The AI brings velocity. I bring density. The program needs both, and only one of us can sit with a person.
